Marrakech petit taxi and grand taxi fares in MAD, Menara airport rates, medina zone pricing, and how to avoid overcharging in Morocco 2026.
Marrakech has two taxi tiers: red petit taxis (metered, within city limits) and grand taxis (beige, fixed routes, negotiated). Knowing which to use — and insisting on the meter — will save you significant money as a tourist.
Petit taxi drivers frequently claim the meter is broken or suggest a fixed price before you get in. The meter is legally required. If a driver refuses to use the meter, exit the taxi and find another. Quoting a fixed price without the meter is almost always more expensive than the metered fare.
Marrakech Menara Airport is just 3 km from the city centre — one of the closest major airports to any city in North Africa. Official petit taxi fares from the airport are set by the municipality.
The official airport petit taxi rate is posted on a board inside the arrivals hall. Memorise the fare for your destination before walking out — drivers may quote higher figures knowing tourists have just landed.
Petit taxis cannot enter the narrow lanes of the medina. They drop off at the nearest accessible gate (Bab Doukkala, Bab Laksour, etc.). From there, you walk or use a horse-drawn calèche or mule cart. The taxi ride to the gate from Gueliz costs 15–25 MAD. Always agree the Medina gate destination clearly — "Jemaa el-Fnaa" will take you to the closest accessible drop-off.
Grand taxis (large Mercedes saloons, usually beige) operate fixed intercity routes — Marrakech to Essaouira, Ouarzazate, etc. They depart when full (6 passengers) or you can buy multiple seats for a private run. Fares are negotiated. For day trips to the Atlas Mountains or Ourika Valley, a negotiated grand taxi is often the cheapest option if you're in a small group.
How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the medina?
70–80 MAD in a petit taxi (officially posted rate). The journey takes 10–15 minutes. Agree the fare at the official board inside arrivals.
Can I use Uber or Bolt in Marrakech?
Neither Uber nor Bolt operates in Marrakech. Use petit taxis with the meter, or book a riad transfer in advance. Some riads arrange private transfers.
What is the night rate for taxis in Marrakech?
After 8 pm, petit taxis apply a 50% night surcharge on the meter. This is legal — the meter rate itself changes. A trip costing 30 MAD by day costs around 45 MAD at night.
